Dead Stock: Which Products Don't Earn Their Shelf Space? | byrd

Written by Phillip Pitsch | Jul 29, 2026, 7:54:36 AM

Every product range has them. Products that were a good idea two years ago, have sat on the shelf ever since, and do three things: rack up storage fees, tie up capital, and eat time at every stock count. The problem with dead stock isn't that it exists. The problem is that it's invisible: no dashboard raises an alarm for a product that simply does nothing.

The dead stock report from byrdAI makes exactly these silent products visible, sorted by the capital they tie up. And it answers the question that comes next: what do you do with them?

The problem: doing nothing gets no one's attention

Dead stock sets off no alarm.
A stockout hurts right away, and so does a wave of returns. A product that hasn't been ordered in 14 months does nothing at all, and that's exactly why no one deals with it.

The costs are hidden but real.
Every occupied storage location costs you money each month. On top of that comes the tied-up capital: goods you've paid for that never turn back into revenue as long as they sit there.

Gut feeling deceives.
Asked about their dead stock, most merchants name two or three suspects. The report regularly shows far more, sometimes several times as many. Among them are often products that have never seen a single order.

How to find your dead stock with byrdAI

Once you're connected, all it takes in Claude or ChatGPT is a question like this:

"Which products haven't moved in the last 90 days?"

byrdAI pulls your live data from byrd and returns every affected product with its status, stock on hand, last shipping date, and tied-up stock value. With the ready-made dashboard prompt from the byrdAI page, that turns into a live dashboard that splits your silent products into three honest categories:

  • Never sold: not a single order since it was created. The hardest cases, and usually the clearest decisions.
  • Not sold in a long time: ordered before, dead for months. Here it pays to look at the cause: price, visibility, season?
  • Slow: a trickle. Five sales in six months rarely justify a storage location of their own.

The decisions you draw from it

Never-sellers: out.
Send them back to the supplier, donate them, write them off, or use them as a free add-on. Anything beats another twelve months of storage costs for a product without a single buyer.

High-value slow movers: activate instead of write off.
Products with meaningful stock value belong in a bundle with a bestseller, in a discount campaign, or in a marketplace deal. Your ABC analysis shows you which A-items make good anchors for the bundle.

Clear out the rest for good.
Trimming your range isn't an admission of failure, it's hygiene: fewer SKUs mean fewer storage locations, less counting effort, and more focus on the products that carry your business.

From dead stock report to routine

The quarterly review.
"On the first Monday of each quarter, build me the dead stock list, sorted by tied-up capital, with one recommendation per product: sell down, bundle, or delist." An unpleasant ad-hoc project becomes a 20-minute routine.

The bundle suggestion.
"For my 10 most valuable dead stock items, suggest a bundle each with a matching bestseller, including a price recommendation." The assistant combines the dead stock report and top-mover data in a single answer.

The new-product watchdog.
"Let me know when a product still has fewer than 5 sales 120 days after it was created." That's how you spot flops early, while the stock is still small and the problem is still cheap.

The clearance campaign.
With a follow-up prompt, the list turns straight into a campaign draft: affected products, remaining stock, recommended discount, and a text block for the newsletter.

Frequently asked questions about the dead stock report with byrdAI

When does a product count as dead stock?
By default the report uses a threshold of at most 5 units sold in the chosen window (90, 180, or 365 days). You can adjust the threshold freely by prompt.

What's the difference from the overstock report?
The dead stock report finds products that barely or never sell, a demand problem. The overstock report finds products that sell well but sit in far too large a quantity, a purchasing problem. Together they show you your total tied-up capital.
