Bestseller analysis: which products really carry your volume? | byrd

Written by Phillip Pitsch | 29 Jul 2026, 07:24:42

Ask a merchant about their three bestsellers and you get a quick answer. Ask about positions four to fifteen, about the share of the top 10 in total volume, or about which bestseller is quietly losing momentum, and it often goes quiet. That is exactly the gap the top-mover report from byrdAI fills: your sales ranking, live from your fulfilment data, in seconds rather than after a CSV export.

The problem: bestsellers get celebrated, but not managed

The ranking lives in your head.
And your head is usually three months behind. Products rise and fall, promotions shift the picture, seasonality does anyway. Decisions about ad budget, purchasing and storage space need the current ranking, not the felt one.

Concentration is invisible.
When a single SKU is in 12% of all orders (a real case from our demo data), that SKU is not a line in a list but a concentration risk. A stockout there hits every eighth order.

Reports cost time when you need them.
The question "What were our top 10 last month?" tends to come up at 4pm on a Friday before the monthly meeting. Then the ritual begins: export, pivot, screenshot, slide. There is a more efficient, faster and simpler way.

How to build the top mover report with byrdAI

Once connected, this is all it takes in Claude or ChatGPT:

"What were my 10 best-selling products last month?"

byrdAI returns the ranking by dispatch volume, with quantities, order count and share of total volume. With the ready-made dashboard prompt from the byrdAI page and further down in the text, or any adjustments of your own, Claude builds you a live dashboard: a bestseller leaderboard, demand concentration as a Pareto curve, the share of bundles in your volume and a sortable table across the entire range.

The report splits your range into four demand tiers: bestsellers (the SKUs that together carry half your volume), strong products, a solid middle and the long tail. So you see not only who is out in front, but how steeply your range drops off.

Which decisions to draw from it

Protect bestsellers from stockouts.
Your top products deserve the strictest stock monitoring. Combine the ranking with the
reorder planner: "How many days of coverage do my top 10 have?" is perhaps the single most valuable question in this whole setup.

Align ad budget with reality.
Is your advertising running for the products that actually pull volume? The comparison between the top-mover list and campaign budget regularly reveals expensive discrepancies.

Manage concentration risk deliberately.
High concentration is not bad, it is only risky when you do not know about it. If you know that three SKUs carry half the business, you secure suppliers, stock, and alternatives precisely there.

Use bundles in a targeted way.
The report shows what share bundles have in your volume. If they pull well, they are your best lever for coupling slow movers with workhorses.

From report to routine: know your bestsellers

The monthly report that writes itself.
"Create my top 15 of the previous month compared with the month before, and send the summary to the management update in Slack." The Friday-4pm ritual disappears entirely.

The trend watchdog.
"Compare my top movers with the previous month and flag products that are clearly accelerating or slowing down." You spot risers before they sell out, and decliners before they turn into overstock.

The peak-season check.
Before the fourth quarter: "Show me the top movers from Q4 last year and compare their current coverage with the demand back then." The purchasing list for the peak almost writes itself.

The presentation shortcut.
"Format the top 10 as a table for my monthly presentation, with the change versus the previous month as an arrow." Paste it straight in, done.

Frequently asked questions about the top mover report with byrdAI

What is the difference from the ABC analysis?
The top-mover report is a ranking: who sells how much, how concentrated is the demand, who is rising and falling. The
ABC analysis classifies the entire range and derives storage and ordering rules per class from it. A ranking for the quick look, a classification for the policy.

What period is considered?
By default, the last 90 days. By prompt you choose freely: last month, last quarter, 12 months or a comparison of two periods.

Does the report count revenue or units?
Units shipped. Volume is the more reliable measure for fulfilment decisions; you add revenue and margin from your shop system as needed, ideally in the same Claude session.

What does byrdAI cost?
During the beta, byrdAI is included free in your account for byrd customers.
