# Top movers: know your bestsellers. And protect them.

Your sales ranking live from your fulfilment data, not from gut feeling.

<https://blog.getbyrd.com/en-gb/author/phillip-pitsch> [**Phillip Pitsch**](https://blog.getbyrd.com/en-gb/author/phillip-pitsch)

 : July 29, 2026 : August 03, 2026

Ask a merchant about their three bestsellers and you get a quick answer. Ask about positions four to fifteen, about the share of the top 10 in total volume, or about which bestseller is quietly losing momentum, and it often goes quiet. That is exactly the gap the top-mover report from [byrdAI](https://www.getbyrd.com/uk/byrd-ai) fills: your sales ranking, live from your fulfilment data, in seconds rather than after a CSV export.

## **The problem: bestsellers get celebrated, but not managed**

**The ranking lives in your head.**
And your head is usually three months behind. Products rise and fall, promotions shift the picture, seasonality does anyway. Decisions about ad budget, purchasing and storage space need the current ranking, not the felt one.

**Concentration is invisible.**
When a single SKU is in 12% of all orders (a real case from our demo data), that SKU is not a line in a list but a concentration risk. A stockout there hits every eighth order.

**Reports cost time when you need them.**
The question "What were our top 10 last month?" tends to come up at 4pm on a Friday before the monthly meeting. Then the ritual begins: export, pivot, screenshot, slide. There is a more efficient, faster and simpler way.

**How to build the top mover report with byrdAI**

Once connected, this is all it takes in Claude or ChatGPT:

"What were my 10 best-selling products last month?"

byrdAI returns the ranking by dispatch volume, with quantities, order count and share of total volume. With the ready-made dashboard prompt from the [byrdAI page](https://www.getbyrd.com/uk/byrd-ai) and further down in the text, or any adjustments of your own, Claude builds you a live dashboard: a bestseller leaderboard, demand concentration as a Pareto curve, the share of bundles in your volume and a sortable table across the entire range.

![Top-Mover-Report byrdAi](https://blog.getbyrd.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Screenshot%202026-07-24%20at%2014.35.26.png?width=1143&height=937&name=Screenshot%202026-07-24%20at%2014.35.26.png)

## **![byrdAi Top-Mover-Report](https://blog.getbyrd.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Screenshot%202026-07-24%20at%2014.35.40.png?width=763&height=394&name=Screenshot%202026-07-24%20at%2014.35.40.png)**

The report splits your range into four demand tiers: bestsellers (the SKUs that together carry half your volume), strong products, a solid middle and the long tail. So you see not only who is out in front, but how steeply your range drops off.

## **Which decisions to draw from it**

**Protect bestsellers from stockouts.**
Your top products deserve the strictest stock monitoring. Combine the ranking with the [reorder planner](https://blog.getbyrd.com/en-gb/plan-reordering-coverage-byrdai?hsLang=en-gb): "How many days of coverage do my top 10 have?" is perhaps the single most valuable question in this whole setup.

**Align ad budget with reality.**
Is your advertising running for the products that actually pull volume? The comparison between the top-mover list and campaign budget regularly reveals expensive discrepancies.

**Manage concentration risk deliberately.**
High concentration is not bad, it is only risky when you do not know about it. If you know that three SKUs carry half the business, you secure suppliers, stock, and alternatives precisely there.

**Use bundles in a targeted way.**
The report shows what share bundles have in your volume. If they pull well, they are your best lever for coupling slow movers with workhorses.

**Expert tip:**
The ranking is based on units shipped, not on revenue. That is deliberate: for fulfilment decisions (storage space, safety stock, counting cadence), volume is what counts. For range decisions, lay your margins alongside, because a high-volume item with a thin margin deserves different handling from a margin star.

## From report to routine: know your bestsellers

**The monthly report that writes itself.**
"Create my top 15 of the previous month compared with the month before, and send the summary to the management update in Slack." The Friday-4pm ritual disappears entirely.

**The trend watchdog.**
"Compare my top movers with the previous month and flag products that are clearly accelerating or slowing down." You spot risers before they sell out, and decliners before they turn into overstock.

**The peak-season check.**
Before the fourth quarter: "Show me the top movers from Q4 last year and compare their current coverage with the demand back then." The purchasing list for the peak almost writes itself.

**The presentation shortcut.**
"Format the top 10 as a table for my monthly presentation, with the change versus the previous month as an arrow." Paste it straight in, done.

## **Your ranking is already waiting**

As a byrd customer, you connect byrdAI to Claude or ChatGPT in around 5 minutes and copy the top-mover prompt from our [byrdAI page](https://www.getbyrd.com/uk/byrd-ai) or below this section. Not a byrd customer yet? byrdAI comes only with byrd fulfilment, as the first European 3PL with an MCP server. [Talk to us](https://www.getbyrd.com/uk/byrd-ai#byrdai-cta).

### **Example prompt for the top-mover report (adjust it however you like).**

Build a live, persisted HTML dashboard artifact that shows which of my products moved the most units, pulling fresh data from byrd every time it opens. Single self-contained HTML file, light mode only.

## Data source

- Tool: report\_top\_movers (byrd MCP), called with { date\_from, date\_to } for a rolling window: Last quarter (trailing 90 days, default) / 6 months / 12 months. Cache per window.

- Row fields: product\_name, sku, product\_type, units\_shipped, shipment\_count, avg\_daily\_units. One row per product; only SKUs that shipped in the window (no zero-movers). Ranking is by units, not revenue.

- Merchandise only: singles = product\_type "product" or "prepacked\_product", bundles = "bundle"; exclude packaging/branding/alias types.

- Classify each SKU into cumulative-share demand bands computed over the filtered universe (product-type filter + hide-test applied): Bestseller = top SKUs up to 50% of total units, Strong = 50-80%, Steady = 80-95%, Long tail = last 5%. The demand-band and min-units controls act as drill filters on top: KPIs, Pareto and mix stay at universe level while the leaderboard and table respond.

## Tech & style

- Chart.js v4 and Grid.js v5 from the allowed CDN, no other libraries, system font stack.

- Accent turquoise #62C2AF (#2F7A68 for links), text #293141, secondary #4E5664, borders #E5EAEE, page #FAFAFA, cards #fff.

- Demand-band colours: Bestseller dark green #2F7A68, Strong turquoise #62C2AF, Steady amber #F2A03D, Long tail grey #9CA0A8.

## Layout (top to bottom)

1. Header: eyebrow "Demand & sales - bestsellers & fast movers", H1 "Which products moved the most units?", turquoise accent rule, subtitle with the window's date range + "ranked by units shipped" + last-updated time. No logo.

2. Controls card: period buttons Last quarter / 6 months / 12 months (re-fetches); product-type buttons All / Singles / Bundles; demand-band buttons All / Bestsellers / Strong / Steady / Long tail; min-units select; "Hide test SKUs" checkbox.

3. Four KPI cards: Units shipped (total + per day), Products shipped (count + avg units each), Top seller (units + name + share of volume), Top-10 concentration (% of units from 10 SKUs).

4. Hero panel "Bestseller leaderboard": horizontal bars of the top 15 by units shipped, coloured by demand band, with unit labels drawn at the end of each bar (reserve right padding so labels never clip; small custom plugin).

5. Two panels side by side: "Demand concentration" Pareto combo chart (per-SKU share bars + cumulative-share line on a right 0-100% axis, dashed guide at 80% with dynamic sub-text "top N of M SKUs = 80% of volume") and a singles-vs-bundles doughnut with the bundle share rendered in the centre hole (custom plugin).

6. Recommended actions: protect bestsellers from stockouts (name the top SKUs), comment on concentration risk (high/balanced), highlight bundles pulling volume (or basket depth if no bundles), and the broadest-reach product (most orders). Data-driven with impact numbers.

7. Grid.js table (sortable, searchable, 12 rows/page) sorted by units desc: SKU (hover copy button + open-in-byrd link to https://app.getbyrd.com/inventory/products/all?q=<sku>&fields=sku), Product, Demand-band badge, Units as an inline mini-bar + number, Share %, Orders, Units/order. Give Grid.js columns with HTML headers an explicit id. Above: "Showing N products" + "Copy N SKUs" button.

8. Footer explaining: ranked by units shipped (shipment prices aren't reliable enough for revenue ranking); demand bands are cumulative-share buckets over the filtered universe; only SKUs with at least one shipment in the window appear.

## Details

- Thousands separators; shares with 1 decimal ("22.8%"); units/order with 1 decimal. Escape all dynamic HTML.

- Custom positioned tooltip div driven by data-tip attributes (native tooltips don't work in the sandbox).

- Handle a missing connector gracefully; show loading and error states.

Finish by verifying the rows load, the leaderboard / Pareto / doughnut render, and there are no console errors.

## **Frequently asked questions about the top mover report with byrdAI**

**What is the difference from the ABC analysis?**
The top-mover report is a ranking: who sells how much, how concentrated is the demand, who is rising and falling. The [ABC analysis](https://blog.getbyrd.com/en-gb/abc-analysis-inventory-byrdai?hsLang=en-gb) classifies the entire range and derives storage and ordering rules per class from it. A ranking for the quick look, a classification for the policy.

**What period is considered?**
By default, the last 90 days. By prompt you choose freely: last month, last quarter, 12 months or a comparison of two periods.

**Does the report count revenue or units?**
Units shipped. Volume is the more reliable measure for fulfilment decisions; you add revenue and margin from your shop system as needed, ideally in the same Claude session.

**What does byrdAI cost?**
During the beta, byrdAI is included free in your account for byrd customers.
