# The Top 12 Online Marketplaces in France 2026

Check out which online platforms are the most popular

## Table of Content

**France keeps buying online.** According to the French e-commerce association [FEVAD](https://www.fevad.com/bilan-du-e-commerce-en-france-les-francais-ont-depense-pres-de-200-milliards-deuros-sur-internet-en-2025/), French consumers spent around €196.4 billion online in 2025, 7% more than the year before. Physical products accounted for €76.1 billion of that, and the market grew by another [6.6%](https://www.fevad.com/le-e-commerce-progresse-de-66-au-premier-semestre-2026/) in the first half of 2026. It's also a year of change: Rakuten France closed its marketplace at the end of September, Kaufland is the new kid on the block, and France has passed its own law against ultra-fast fashion.

For brands from outside France, marketplaces are one of the fastest ways to reach French shoppers without building a local business from scratch. In this article, we walk you through **the top 12 online marketplaces in France in 2026**, with visitor numbers, fees and the rules international sellers need to know before they start.

## What is an online marketplace?

Think of an online marketplace as a digital shopping mall: many sellers list their products in one place, and customers buy and pay directly on the platform. For sellers, the appeal is simple. The marketplace brings the traffic, the payment processing and the trust, and you can get started quickly. That makes marketplaces a great way to [expand into new markets](https://blog.getbyrd.com/en/expand-ecommerce-into-europe?hsLang=en).

To count as an online marketplace, a platform has to meet two criteria:

- Customers can buy products directly on the website or in the app
- The platform brings together a large number of buyers and third-party sellers

Price comparison sites that only redirect to external shops don't qualify. Depending on the model, there are B2B, B2C and C2C marketplaces, horizontal (broad assortment) and vertical (one niche) marketplaces, and product-based and service-based platforms. In this article, we focus on product-based marketplaces where businesses can sell.

## Overview of the French online marketplace landscape

The key figures on French e-commerce at a glance:

- **€196.4 billion** in online sales in 2025 (+7%), including €76.1 billion for products. The average basket was €62 (FEVAD).
- **42.2 million** people shop online in France, 80% of everyone aged 16 to 74 ([FEVAD Chiffres clés 2026](https://www.fevad.com/ledition-2026-des-chiffres-cles-du-e-commerce/)).
- **32%** of online product sales in France now go through marketplaces, according to FEVAD's 2026 key figures (via [Sellermania](https://www.sellermania.com/fr/blog/marketplaces/rapport-fevad-2026-chiffres-e-commerce-vendeurs-marketplace/)).
- **53 million** internet users visited at least one of the 20 biggest e-commerce sites every month in Q2 2026. Amazon alone reached 41.2 million unique visitors ([Fevad/Médiamétrie, via TourMaG](https://www.tourmag.com/E-commerce-Booking-com-s-invite-sur-le-podium-le-voyage-gagne-du-terrain_a133141.html)).
- **29%** of clothing bought online from January to July 2026 came from Shein, Temu and AliExpress, up from 19% in 2025 (Institut Français de la Mode, via [La Gazette France](https://www.lagazettefrance.fr/article/habillement-shein-temu-et-aliexpress-representent-pres-d-un-tiers-des-achats-en-ligne-etude)).

Two French rules apply to everyone, wherever you're based. First, the [Loi Toubon](https://www.culture.gouv.fr/thematiques/langue-francaise-et-langues-de-france/agir-pour-les-langues/garantir-l-emploi-du-francais) requires product listings, descriptions, instructions, warranty terms and invoices for consumers to be in French. Second, France applies extended producer responsibility (REP): marketplaces like Amazon ask for a unique identifier (IDU) for every product category concerned, for example packaging, electrical equipment or textiles.

**Selling into France from abroad: the essentials**

- **Based in the EU?** You can report your B2C sales to France through the EU's One-Stop Shop (OSS). If you store stock in France, you'll also need a French VAT number. Our guide to [VAT in European fulfillment](https://blog.getbyrd.com/en/vat-fulfillment-europe?hsLang=en) explains the details.
- **Based outside the EU?** You'll need a French VAT number and, as a rule, a [fiscal representative](https://www.douane.gouv.fr/fiche/identification-la-tva-et-representation-fiscale) in France. Companies from countries that have a mutual assistance agreement with France are exempt, and France has [confirmed](https://www.asd-int.com/en/in-which-eu-countries-uk-companies-have-to-appoint-a-fiscal-representative/) this exemption for UK companies.
- **Shipping parcels from outside the EU?** Since 1 July 2026, the EU charges a flat [customs duty of €3](https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/press/press-releases/2026/02/11/council-gives-final-green-light-to-new-customs-duty-rules-for-small-parcels/) on each item category in parcels worth less than €150. One more reason why many brands keep their stock inside the EU and ship to French customers from there.
- **Customer service in French:** marketplaces expect you to communicate with customers in the local language. Kaufland, for example, makes it a [requirement](https://www.kauflandglobalmarketplace.com/en/seller-registration/).

Now let's look at the most popular online marketplaces in France by monthly visits. The data comes from [Similarweb](https://www.similarweb.com/top-websites/france/e-commerce-and-shopping/) and refers to **August 2026** (retrieved in October 2026). The figures are directional and count web visits to each domain; app usage isn't included. For Fnac and Darty, we added up both domains because they run a joint marketplace. The Fevad/Médiamétrie unique visitor figures in the profiles measure something different (people rather than visits), which is why they're lower.

| # | Marketplace | Visits Aug 2026 | Category | Monthly base fee |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Amazon.fr | 203.8M | Generalist | €39 (Professional) |

## What are the most popular online marketplaces in France?

### #1 Top online marketplace in France: Amazon.fr

![online-marketplaces-france-2026-amazon-en](https://blog.getbyrd.com/hs-fs/hubfs/online-marketplaces-france-2026-amazon-en.png?width=500&height=707&name=online-marketplaces-france-2026-amazon-en.png)

- **Visits in August 2026:** 203.8 million
- **Product category:** Generalist
- **Target region:** Global

No surprise here: Amazon leads French e-commerce too. According to Fevad/Médiamétrie, Amazon reached 41.2 million unique visitors per month in Q2 2026, making it the most visited e-commerce site in the country. According to [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.fr/actualites/creation-demplois-et-investissement/impots-emplois-amazon-impact-france), it generated more than €12 billion in sales in France in 2024 and runs over 35 logistics sites there. More than 16,000 French SMEs sell on Amazon ([Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.fr/actualites/actualites/les-pme-francaises-franchissent-le-cap-du-milliard-deuros-de-ventes-a-lexport-sur-amazon), 2024).

**For sellers:** If you already have a European Seller Central account, you can add Amazon.fr with a few clicks. According to [Amazon](https://sell.amazon.fr/tarifs), the Professional plan costs €39 per month, plus a referral fee per category, for example 7% for electronics. One thing to watch in France: for products covered by REP, you need an IDU number. Without one, Amazon collects the eco-contributions on your behalf and invoices you for them. Not sure whether FBA or FBM fits you better? Read our article on [Amazon FBM Ship+](https://blog.getbyrd.com/en/amazon-fbm-ship-plus?hsLang=en).

#### **Chief advantage of Amazon:**

The biggest reach in the country and the trust of French shoppers. Many international brands test their products on Amazon.fr first.

In 2025, gross merchandise value grew by 47% to €10.8 billion according to [Vinted](https://company.vinted.com/newsroom/financial-results-2025), with revenue of €1.1 billion. With Vinted Go, the company even runs its own parcel service, including in France.

**For sellers:** Businesses can sell through [Vinted Pro](https://www.vinted.fr/pro-guide), but currently only if they're based in France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Spain or Portugal. Companies from other countries, such as the UK, the US or Germany, can't use Vinted Pro yet.

According to [Fnac Darty](https://marketplace.fnacdarty.com/s/), more than 3,000 sellers use the joint marketplace, which covers Belgium, Spain, Portugal and Switzerland as well as France. Worth watching: EP Group, owned by Czech investor Daniel Křetínský, wants to take over Fnac Darty, with closing planned by the end of 2026.

**For sellers:** Fnac Darty works with a logistics partner, but you can also ship yourself. You'll find the terms in the seller portal.

**For sellers:** The marketplace runs on Mirakl, and Leroy Merlin only shares its terms during the application process. Good to know: byrd integrates directly with Mirakl. Once you're approved as a seller on Leroy Merlin, your orders flow to byrd automatically and tracking numbers go back to the marketplace. Find out more on our [Mirakl fulfillment](https://www.getbyrd.com/en/mirakl-fulfillment) page.

A clear focus and a lot of trust in a category that's growing fast in France: refurbished has long been mainstream here. By the way: Vienna-based refurbished marketplace [refurbed](https://www.refurbed.fr/) is active in France too and, according to [Ecommerce Nation](https://www.ecommerce-nation.fr/refurbed-3-milliards-ventes-12-pays-europe/), now covers 24 European markets. refurbed ships its own accessories range across Europe with byrd. ### #12 Top online marketplace in France: Kaufland.fr

![online-marketplaces-france-2026-kaufland-en](https://blog.getbyrd.com/hs-fs/hubfs/online-marketplaces-france-2026-kaufland-en.png?width=500&height=707&name=online-marketplaces-france-2026-kaufland-en.png)

- **Visits in August 2026:** 1.3 million
- **Product category:** Generalist
- **Target region:** Europe

The newest marketplace on this list: according to [Ecommerce News](https://ecommercenews.eu/kaufland-launches-in-france/), Kaufland launched in France in August 2025 with more than 3 million items. With 1.3 million visits in August 2026, Kaufland.fr is still at the beginning, but it's a new channel with little competition. And one account gives you access to all Kaufland countries, from Germany to Italy.

**For sellers:** According to [Kaufland Global Marketplace](https://www.kauflandglobalmarketplace.com/fr/), the subscription starts at €39.95 per month for all countries, and commissions range from 4 to 16% depending on the category. EU sellers need a VAT ID and an OSS registration. Sellers from outside the EU need a tax registration and VAT ID for each country they sell in. Want to learn more about Kaufland? Check out our overview of [online marketplaces in Germany]({BL}/en/online-marketplaces-germany).

#### **Chief advantage of Kaufland:**

One account, the same product data, several new markets. If you're already on Kaufland.de, France is just a few settings away.

### New players: Temu, Shein, AliExpress and TikTok Shop

Few countries debate the platforms from China as intensely as France. For European brands, they're mostly competitors, but in some cases also new channels.

- **Temu:** 21.3 million unique visitors per month in Q2 2026, down 12.7% on the previous quarter (Fevad/Médiamétrie). Since 2024, sellers with a local warehouse in the EU can sell on Temu too, and in October 2025 Temu signed a delivery [partnership](https://tools.prnewswire.com/en-us/live/20813/release/20251015EN98443) with La Poste.
- **Shein:** 15.5 million unique visitors (Fevad/Médiamétrie). Shein suspended its French marketplace in November 2025 after illegal products were found and has been gradually reopening it to selected sellers since January 2026 ([Ecommerce Nation](https://www.ecommerce-nation.fr/shein-rouvre-sa-marketplace-en-france-retour-discret/)).
- **AliExpress:** 15.1 million unique visitors (Fevad/Médiamétrie). With "Local+", AliExpress has been shipping from European warehouses since 2025.
- **TikTok Shop:** live in France since [31 March 2025](https://newsroom.tiktok.com/fr-fr/ouverture-tiktok-shop-france-2025). Since January 2026, the commission is 9% (7% for electronics).

France is responding politically too. The law against ultra-fast fashion of 8 July 2026 introduced an eco-levy per product from 1 September 2026, and advertising for ultra-fast fashion will be banned from 1 January 2027 ([Gossement Avocats](https://www.gossement-avocats.com/blog/fast-fashion-mode-ultra-express-decryptage-de-la-loi-n2026-602-du-8-juillet-2026-visant-a-reduire-limpact-environnemental-de-lindustrie-textile/)). The national fee of €2 per item on small parcels from outside the EU applied from March to July 2026 and was then suspended in favor of the [EU duty of €3](https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/press/press-releases/2026/02/11/council-gives-final-green-light-to-new-customs-duty-rules-for-small-parcels/) ([Ministère de l'Économie](https://www.economie.gouv.fr/particuliers/mes-droits-conso/bien-consommer/tout-savoir-sur-la-taxe-sur-les-petits-colis)).

### Outlook: what changes by 2027

- **Ultra-fast fashion:** the advertising ban applies from 1 January 2027, and the eco-levy rises gradually until 2030.
- **Fnac Darty:** the takeover by EP Group is expected to close by the end of 2026.
- **Kaufland:** after France and Italy, Kaufland has [announced](https://ecommercenews.eu/kaufland-to-launch-in-spain-and-the-netherlands/) Spain and the Netherlands as its next marketplaces.
- **EU customs:** from 1 November 2026, product identifiers are mandatory for low-value imports. The €3 duty applies until 1 July 2028 ([European Commission](https://taxation-customs.ec.europa.eu/news/guidance-and-legal-text-temporary-flat-fee-low-value-imports-which-will-apply-until-1-july-2028-2026-06-08_en)).

### Many more marketplaces

Beyond the top 12, France has more interesting sales channels. **Leboncoin** is the most visited e-commerce site in the country after Amazon (32.1 million unique visitors, Fevad/Médiamétrie), mainly as a classifieds portal with secure payment and shipping, but also with offers for professionals. **Boulanger** runs a curated marketplace for electronics and home appliances with strict service metrics. Then there are the grocery retailers **E.Leclerc** and **Carrefour** with huge reach, and **Zalando** for fashion. One big name is missing, though: **Rakuten France** (formerly PriceMinister) [closed its marketplace on 30 September 2026](https://www.ecommercemag.fr/retail-1220/rakuten-france-fermeture-definitive-de-la-plateforme-ce-30-septembre-2026-59876).

## What are the alternatives and complementary options to online marketplaces in France?

Online marketplaces are an excellent way to get started in e-commerce, grow your sales or [expand into new markets](https://blog.getbyrd.com/en/expand-ecommerce-into-europe?hsLang=en), especially in a niche. Still, [your own online store has some advantages](https://blog.getbyrd.com/en/success-without-amazon-fba?hsLang=en):

- Full control over prices, assortment and processes
- A flexible cost structure without commissions
- Brand building and customer loyalty
- Cross-selling and upselling
- Standing out from the competition
- Direct contact with customers and your own customer data
- Custom packaging

Most successful brands combine both: a French-language store as the foundation and two or three marketplaces for extra reach.

## How can an e-commerce fulfillment company like byrd help?

Thanks to Amazon and co., French shoppers expect fast, affordable delivery too, often to pickup points (points relais). And marketplaces keep a close eye on it: Cdiscount, for example, requires 99% on-time shipments.

For many sellers, that level of [fulfillment](https://getbyrd.com/en/fulfillment/) is hard to deliver profitably on their own, especially from another country. That's where [3PLs](https://blog.getbyrd.com/en/ecommerce-fulfillment-3pl-fulfillment?hsLang=en) (third-party logistics providers) come in. They take care of storage, pick and pack, shipping and [returns](https://blog.getbyrd.com/en/reverse-logistics?hsLang=en), and their volumes get them better rates with the leading [parcel delivery companies in France](https://blog.getbyrd.com/en/top-9-parcel-delivery-companies-in-france?hsLang=en).

With byrd, you keep your stock in one place and serve all your channels from there: orders from Amazon.fr (FBM), Cdiscount, Fnac and Darty, Kaufland.fr, eBay.fr and Zalando, as well as from Mirakl marketplaces like Leroy Merlin, can be connected to byrd and run through the same warehouse as the orders from your own store. You decide which products to sell on which marketplace, and you can see stock, orders, shipments and returns at any time in one dashboard.

## Frequently asked questions about online marketplaces in France

**What is the biggest online marketplace in France?**
Amazon.fr. According to Fevad/Médiamétrie, 41.2 million people visited Amazon every month in Q2 2026, far more than any other e-commerce site in France.

**Which French marketplaces are there?**
The most important French marketplaces are Cdiscount, Leroy Merlin, Fnac and Darty, ManoMano, La Redoute, Veepee, Back Market and Decathlon. On top of that, there are international platforms like Amazon, Vinted, eBay and, since 2025, Kaufland.

**Can I sell on French marketplaces as a non-French company?**
Yes. Most marketplaces, such as Amazon.fr, Cdiscount, Kaufland.fr and eBay.fr, accept companies from other EU countries. Sellers from outside the EU need a French VAT number and usually a fiscal representative; UK companies are exempt from the fiscal representative requirement. Vinted Pro is currently only open to companies based in France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

**Do I have to list my products in French?**
Yes. Under the Loi Toubon, listings, product descriptions, instructions and warranty terms for French consumers must be in French. Other languages are allowed in addition.

**What is an IDU number?**
The IDU (identifiant unique) is your registration number for extended producer responsibility (REP) in France, for example for packaging, electrical equipment or textiles. Marketplaces like Amazon ask for it before you sell affected products in France.

**Is Rakuten still available in France?**
No. Rakuten France closed its marketplace on 30 September 2026. Good alternatives for generalist sellers are Cdiscount, Fnac and Darty, and Kaufland.fr.
